Jobs in Thailand for foreigners: work permits, roles and job checks
How foreigners can approach work in Thailand, verify an employer, understand work permits and restricted occupations, and assess the full employment package.
Read the direct answer ↓
The short answer
A foreigner normally needs immigration status and work authority that match the real employer, role and place of work before starting. Some occupations are prohibited or conditional for foreign workers. Verify the employing Thai entity, sponsorship, authorised duties, salary, tax, social security, insurance and what happens when the job ends before relocating for a role.
Authorisation can be specific to the entity, duties and location.
The Department of Employment publishes prohibited and conditional occupations.
Verify the real employer and role
Confirm the legal entity offering the job, workplace, manager, duties, salary and start date. Ask which visa and work-authorisation process it will sponsor, who pays each fee and when work may legally begin.
Check the entity's registration, business address and whether the proposed role is consistent with its operations. Be cautious when the contract names one company while salary, workplace or supervision comes from another.
Check permission and occupation restrictions
Immigration status and work authority are connected but separate. Match the application to the actual job, entity, duties and location, and retain copies of approvals. Do not rely only on an HR assurance that paperwork has been submitted.
Review the Department of Employment's current prohibited and conditional occupation list. Job titles can be misleading, so compare the real daily tasks rather than renaming restricted work.

- ✓Authorised role and location
- ✓Lawful start date
- ✓Occupation restriction check

Price the complete employment package
Compare gross salary with personal tax, social security, health insurance, leave, bonus, probation, severance, relocation, flights, housing and school support. A locally competitive salary may fund a different lifestyle from an overseas package.
Ask which hospital is linked to social-security registration and what private cover is included. Read dependant coverage and what happens to insurance when employment ends.
Plan for the job ending
Understand notice, final salary, severance, visa and work-authorisation cancellation, insurance end date and how quickly a new status or departure may be required. Keep personal copies of contracts, payslips, tax withholding and immigration documents.
If the role involves directorship, signing contracts, regional management or work for several entities, obtain advice on company authority, tax and work-permission scope rather than assuming a broad job title covers everything.

Questions people ask next.
These answers are general. Use the dated official sources below and check the authority handling your exact case.
Can foreigners work in Thailand?
Yes, foreigners work in many sectors, but the immigration status, work authority, employer, role and occupation restrictions must align. Permission should be confirmed before work begins.
What jobs are prohibited for foreigners in Thailand?
The Department of Employment publishes prohibited and conditional occupation lists. Check the current official notification and the real duties, because a renamed job title does not change restricted work.
Can I start while my work permit is processing?
Do not assume that a pending application authorises work. Ask the employer and a qualified adviser to identify the exact legal basis and approved start date.
Does remote work need a Thai work permit?
The answer depends on the visa category and real activity. Foreign employer, Thai customers, management authority, local staff and time in Thailand can all matter. DTV and LTR routes have specific published conditions rather than a universal remote-work exemption.
