Eligibility before marketing

Thailand e-wallets
with restricted access.

Check before relying on them

Moreta Pay, GrabPay Wallet and ShopeePay may appear in search results for Thailand payments, but their current rules make them restricted, unsuitable or unavailable for many passport-holding arrivals.

The short answer

Do not build an arrival plan around an app name alone.

Check the exact product

Using Grab with an international card is not the same as qualifying for GrabPay Wallet. A wallet accepting international funding does not prove that Thai QR payments work. An old foreigner setup article does not override a later discontinuation notice.

Current position

Three different restrictions.

These are evidence-based eligibility summaries, not personal performance tests. Confirm the current live app and official help centre before depositing money.

Thailand service restricted

Moreta Pay

Not currently a general Thailand recommendation. Moreta's help centre says Thai QR payments have been paused since 29 June 2026, except business QR payments for customers verified with a US or Canadian passport.

Only the narrow group currently confirmed by Moreta, and only after checking the live service notice immediately before funding.
Poor fit for passport-only arrivals

GrabPay Wallet Thailand

Do not confuse paying for Grab with a foreign card and opening a Thai GrabPay Wallet. Grab's Thai wallet terms require a citizen identification number, so it is not a dependable first-week scan-pay route for a passport-only arrival.

Existing eligible Thai GrabPay Wallet users. Foreign arrivals can still use the Grab app with other payment methods where the app accepts them.
Unavailable to foreign users

ShopeePay Thailand

Not available as a new-arrival solution. ShopeePay Thailand announced the discontinuation of all foreign users' wallet accounts from 31 January 2025.

This review exists to prevent foreign residents and visitors following obsolete setup guides. It is not a signup recommendation.
01

Moreta Pay

Thailand QR service is paused for most users. The published exception is narrow and relates to eligible US or Canadian passport holders paying supported business QR codes. Personal Thai QR is not supported.

02

GrabPay Wallet

Grab's Thai wallet terms refer to a citizen identification number. A visitor may still pay for Grab transport or delivery by another accepted method without qualifying for the separate wallet.

03

ShopeePay

ShopeePay Thailand published a discontinuation notice for foreign-user wallet accounts. Marketplace checkout methods are a separate question and do not restore wallet eligibility.

A more realistic first-week plan

Use a wallet that publishes a foreign-arrival route.

Start with the main comparison of DeepPocket, TAGTHAi Easy Pay and TrueMoney. Verify passport eligibility, QR type, funding fees and withdrawal before loading a small test amount. Keep cash and an independent card available.
