The short answer

Spain now has a fully online Vodafone DataOnly tourist eSIM as well as domestic prepaid eSIMs with Spanish numbers. The right choice depends mainly on whether voice and local verification matter.

Vodafone DataOnly is designed for immediate tourist data. A voice-enabled Vodafone or Orange prepaid eSIM is more useful when you need a Spanish number and ordinary local calls.

Do not confuse a data-only tourist eSIM with a full Spanish mobile line. EU roaming allowances and service in the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla should be checked against the exact terms.

Prices are deliberately excluded because promotions move quickly. Product characteristics and official local guidance were checked on 24 August 2026; the linked checkout terms take precedence if they change.

01Local number

A Spanish number can help with property portals, restaurant callbacks, deliveries and local account verification. A data-only tourist eSIM is simpler when maps, messaging and web access are enough.

02Fixed data

Compare the same allowance, validity and named network across global providers.

03Heavy daily use

Read fair-use and hotspot definitions before buying an unlimited-labelled plan.

04Several countries

Do not confuse a data-only tourist eSIM with a full Spanish mobile line. EU roaming allowances and service in the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla should be checked against the exact terms.

The network underneath

A provider name is not coverage.

Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and MasOrange-related brands form the main network environment. Check the exact partner before judging coverage in an old-city flat, on an intercity route or across an island.

Test the chosen neighbourhood, commuter journey, high-speed rail route and any island, mountain or rural area relevant to the move.

Start with the provider's exact network field, then compare it with the current official sources below. A coverage map is a prediction and cannot guarantee signal inside a future home.

Routing matters too.An international eSIM may send traffic through an overseas gateway. That can affect latency, IP-based services and where an app thinks you are even when the local radio signal is strong.

Before checkout

Six questions that expose weak comparisons.

A useful comparison holds the trip constant: same dates, same usable high-speed data, same locations, same number requirement and the same sharing behaviour.

01

Local operator or roaming profile?

Vodafone DataOnly is designed for immediate tourist data. A voice-enabled Vodafone or Orange prepaid eSIM is more useful when you need a Spanish number and ordinary local calls.

02

Which network is underneath?

Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and MasOrange-related brands form the main network environment. Check the exact partner before judging coverage in an old-city flat, on an intercity route or across an island. Open the network field for the exact package before paying.

03

Do you need a Spain number?

A Spanish number can help with property portals, restaurant callbacks, deliveries and local account verification. A data-only tourist eSIM is simpler when maps, messaging and web access are enough.

04

What does unlimited mean?

Find the high-speed allowance, reduced speed, reset time, traffic-management terms and hotspot limit. The headline adjective is not a usable-data specification.

05

Will you work through it?

Test the plan in a Madrid coworking café, away from hotel Wi-Fi. A product that handles maps may still be unsuitable for laptop tethering, cloud backup or long video calls.

06

What is the failure plan?

Save the QR code, APN, receipt and support details offline. Keep airport Wi-Fi at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, home-network roaming or an official operator shop as a fallback.

Scouting-trip use

Use data to investigate a life, not merely navigate a holiday.

Save possible homes, test peak-hour routes, message agents, translate administrative conversations, locate clinics and run a real work call away from hotel Wi-Fi. Test the chosen neighbourhood, commuter journey, high-speed rail route and any island, mountain or rural area relevant to the move.

Arrival sequence

Configure the two lines deliberately.

Menu names vary. Use the phone manufacturer's current instructions plus the purchased provider's destination setup guide.

  1. 01

    Confirm compatibility and unlock status

Match the exact phone model and market variant. eSIM support does not prove that the device is unlocked or compatible with local voice requirements.

  2. 02

    Install over reliable Wi-Fi

Save the QR code, manual activation details, receipt, terms and support contact offline. Check whether installation starts validity.

  3. 03

    Label the lines

Name them “Home” and “Spain data”. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and disable automatic data switching.

  4. 04

    Follow roaming and APN instructions

Enable data roaming only on the travel line when required. Keep home-line data roaming off unless deliberately needed.

  5. 05

    Complete local registration

Voice-enabled prepaid service is linked to identity details. Keep the passport used for registration and check the provider's online or shop process.

  6. 06

    Test before leaving the gateway

Turn off Wi-Fi at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, load a map and webpage, then check the selected data line. Keep a fallback and do not delete the eSIM unless support confirms it can be reinstalled.

If Spain becomes home

Travel data is a bridge. A domestic mobile arrangement is a separate decision.

Longer-term residents often benefit from a stable Spanish number and direct operator or MVNO account. Compare prepaid with no-commitment contracts after confirming address and payment requirements.

Keep the travel eSIM working until the new line has been activated, tested and attached to the accounts that matter. Do not cancel the home number before changing every recovery and verification method tied to it.

Quick answers

Spain eSIM questions.

Where an answer depends on a plan, the provider's current product terms take precedence over this overview.

Which is the best eSIM for Spain?

There is no supportable winner for every trip. Start with the need for a Spain number, then compare the exact local network, high-speed allowance, hotspot rule, validity and support. Vodafone DataOnly is designed for immediate tourist data. A voice-enabled Vodafone or Orange prepaid eSIM is more useful when you need a Spanish number and ordinary local calls.

Do I need a passport for a Spain eSIM?

Voice-enabled prepaid service is linked to identity details. Keep the passport used for registration and check the provider's online or shop process. A global data-only travel eSIM follows the seller's identity process instead and may not provide a domestic number.

Should I install my Spain eSIM before flying?

Install a global travel eSIM while reliable Wi-Fi and support are available, unless the provider says installation starts validity. A local product may require arrival, identity verification or an in-country network connection. Save the QR code and manual settings offline.

Will a data-only eSIM work for a relocation-scouting trip in Spain?

It will support maps, web access, translation and app messaging. A Spanish number can help with property portals, restaurant callbacks, deliveries and local account verification. A data-only tourist eSIM is simpler when maps, messaging and web access are enough. Keep the home number available for account recovery and check whether receiving an SMS while roaming costs anything.

Does an unlimited Spain eSIM provide unlimited hotspot use?

Not necessarily. Find the full-speed amount, reduced speed, reset time, traffic-management terms and separate tethering limit. Compare usable high-speed data rather than the word unlimited.

Can one eSIM cover all of Spain?

Only where the selected partner network and local conditions provide service. Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and MasOrange-related brands form the main network environment. Check the exact partner before judging coverage in an old-city flat, on an intercity route or across an island. Coverage maps are useful predictions, not guarantees inside a specific building or along every route.
