Where to live in Thailand
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hua Hin solve different problems. Compare work, healthcare, schools, climate, air quality, transport and housing at neighbourhood level rather than city level.

The decision in one paragraph
There is no best expat city. There is a best fit for a particular household, visa, budget, medical need and tolerance for heat, traffic, smoke, rain or island logistics.
A lower-rise rhythm with major seasonal air-quality planning.
Balance tourism, healthcare, transport and wet-season or weekend patterns.
Bangkok: optimise the daily line
Bangkok offers the broadest concentration of employment, international schools, private hospitals, airports and rail-connected neighbourhoods. The trade-off is time: a short map distance can become a long peak-hour journey. Choose the work or school line first, then compare neighbourhoods with a manageable walk and reliable alternatives.
High-rise living can simplify security, facilities and maintenance, but inspect building management, lifts, fire exits, noise and actual utility charging. Low-rise areas may offer more space and character with a different flood, taxi and walking profile.
- ✓Plot work, school and hospital
- ✓Test wet-weather commute
- ✓Check evening noise and walking
- ✓Compare monthly total, not rent alone
- ✓Take a flexible lease first
Chiang Mai: plan around season and location
Chiang Mai can offer a more compact lifestyle, creative community and access to northern landscapes. Neighbourhoods differ in aircraft noise, traffic, walkability and access to hospitals or schools. Seasonal air pollution is a material health and housing factor; assess filtration, building sealing and whether you can leave during difficult periods.
Phuket: treat the island as several markets
Phuket's west-coast tourism centres, Phuket Town, family areas and quieter north have different price, traffic and community patterns. Vehicle dependence, wet-season journeys, airport distance, water management and access to preferred healthcare all affect suitability. Test the precise route rather than using island-wide averages.
Hua Hin: test the long-term routine
Hua Hin combines a coastal setting with road and rail connections toward Bangkok and a substantial retiree presence. Compare central walkability, outer developments, hospital access and weekend or holiday traffic. A house outside the centre may be peaceful but create vehicle and maintenance dependence.
Run a two-week neighbourhood trial
Stay as close as possible to the intended street, work at normal hours, shop for ordinary groceries, test the internet and make the main journey repeatedly. Speak to building staff and neighbours about flooding, outages, noise and seasonal changes before signing a long lease.

Common failure points
What to watch for
City averages
Rent, traffic, flood exposure and daily convenience can change block by block.
Holiday fit
A place that feels effortless for a week may not support work, school, health or rainy-season life.
One-season viewing
Heat, smoke, monsoon rain and tourism cycles can transform the same address.
