Visas & residency in Thailand

Choose a route for the life you will actually lead, then build a calendar around every expiry, report and travel condition. A visa label alone never tells the whole story.

The decision in one paragraph

Entry permission, an extension of stay, a re-entry permission and authority to work are separate questions. Confirm each one against your exact nationality, activity and place of application.

Eligibility and evidence depend on the selected category and mission.

02Report90-day notification

Relevant to many people staying continuously beyond 90 days; check the official window.

03WorkSeparate authority

Do not infer work rights from a visa or entry stamp alone.

01

Start with purpose, not duration

Write down why you are in Thailand: Thai employment, a foreign employer, retirement, study, family, business, medical treatment or an extended visit. Then compare only the official categories that match that purpose. Long validity is not the same as permission to perform every activity.

Check where the application must be made, the passport validity required, financial evidence, insurance conditions, dependant rules and whether the category permits an in-country extension. Rules can differ by embassy or consulate because the required evidence is assessed by the mission handling the application.

Your checklist
  • Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-Visa eligibility tool
  • Save the issued visa, entry stamp and every receipt
  • Record the admitted-until date shown at entry
  • Check whether departure requires re-entry permission
02

Treat arrival as a document audit

Before leaving immigration control, check the stamp and admitted-until date. Keep a clear scan of the passport bio page, visa, entry stamp, boarding pass and accommodation evidence. If a landlord or hotel completes an address notification, retain the acknowledgement because later processes may ask for it.

A 90-day notification is not a renewal and does not extend permission to stay. An extension does not automatically preserve status after travel. Build separate reminders for the admitted-until date, reporting windows, passport expiry and any work-permit or insurance renewal.

03

Compare long-stay routes carefully

Retirement categories, the Destination Thailand Visa, BOI Long-Term Resident routes, marriage or dependant status and employment-based permissions solve different problems. Compare eligibility, permitted activity, reporting, insurance, tax consequences and what happens when the underlying job, relationship or income changes.

Do not choose a category solely because an agent describes it as easy. Ask for the official category name, the government page supporting every claim and a written list of what is authorised and what is not.

04

Know when to obtain specialist help

Get regulated legal help when there has been an overstay, refusal, disputed work activity, criminal issue, family-status complication or conflicting advice from authorities. A reputable adviser should identify the legal basis and official process, not promise an outcome or retain your passport without a clear reason.

Common failure points

What to watch for

!

Visa validity versus stay

The period in which a visa may be used can differ from the period you are admitted on each entry.

!

Travel cancelling permission

Some permissions can lapse on departure unless the correct re-entry permission applies.

!

Unofficial guarantees

Avoid anyone promising approval, backdated records or a result without normal evidence.
