Money & banking

Living abroad means managing local expenses, overseas income, currency conversion, account access and financial checks across institutions that may not understand the whole picture.

Questions to answer

01

Can you open and keep the account?

Banks may require a residence status, local address, tax number, employment evidence or minimum deposit—and may review these later.

02

What does moving money cost?

Compare the exchange-rate margin, transfer fee, receiving-bank deductions, speed and limits rather than focusing on one advertised fee.

03

Will home-country providers retain you?

Notify providers where required and check whether changing address affects banking, investments, credit, insurance or account eligibility.

04

How will you prove source of funds?

Property purchases, large transfers and business receipts may trigger detailed checks. Keep contracts, payslips, tax returns and sale evidence accessible.

Practical sequence

Your first five steps

  1. 01

Maintain at least two independent ways to access money.

  2. 02

Keep a working phone number and authentication method for each essential account.

  3. 03

Test a small international transfer before sending a large amount.

  4. 04

Record account details and emergency numbers securely, separate from your wallet.

  5. 05

Update tax-residence declarations accurately with financial institutions.

Common mistakes

What to watch for

Using one fintech account for everything

A compliance review or technical problem can temporarily restrict access, even where the funds are legitimate.

Comparing transfer fees without rates

The exchange-rate spread can cost substantially more than the visible transaction fee.

Letting home authentication expire

Losing a home-country number or address can make recovery difficult, so change authentication deliberately before access disappears.

The country lens

Location changes the answer.

Deposit protection, capital controls, cash usage, card acceptance, account-opening standards and transfer reporting differ. Confirm the legal status of any bank or payment provider used locally.

When to get help

Know where guidance ends.

Professional tax or financial advice may be needed before moving significant investments, pensions or house-purchase funds, especially where currency, reporting and tax timing interact.
