Test the commute, noise, flooding and services before a long lease.
A practical relocation sequence
Thailand guide 02 / 13 · reviewed 21 August 2026
Moving to Thailand
Move the documents first, the essentials second and the household shipment last. The best relocation plan keeps irreversible decisions until you understand your visa, neighbourhood and customs position.

The decision in one paragraph
A successful move is less about packing everything and more about sequencing immigration, healthcare, money, temporary housing, shipping and local setup.
Used household effects have eligibility, timing and quantity conditions.
Civil, education and professional records may need legalisation.
Plan the move in three layers
Before departure, settle the permission to stay, insurance, initial cash access and an address for the first weeks. Pack a hand-carried document file and enough medication for a safe transition, subject to Thai import rules. Delay major furniture purchases and long leases until you have lived the daily routine.
In the first month, prioritise a working phone number, reliable internet, local transport, an emergency plan and a traceable address record. Banking and government processes can require different combinations of passport, visa, address evidence and supporting letters.
- ✓Create a 90-day relocation calendar
- ✓Scan identity and civil documents
- ✓Carry essential medication lawfully
- ✓Keep two independent payment methods
- ✓Book a flexible first address
Decide what not to ship
Compare door-to-door shipping cost with local replacement cost, apartment size, Thai voltage and climate. Humidity affects books, leather, instruments and electronics. Some buildings limit delivery times or lift access, and many rentals are furnished.
Thai Customs publishes conditions for eligible used household effects and identifies restricted goods. Confirm the current rule before dispatch, because a freight forwarder's estimate is not a customs decision. Keep inventory, proof of use, bill of lading and immigration or work documents together.
Prepare records that travel well
Bring long-form birth and marriage records where relevant, academic transcripts, vaccination history, prescriptions using generic drug names, driving records, insurance claims history and professional licences. Ask the receiving institution whether originals, translations, certification or legalisation are required before paying for the process.
Use a reversible first month
Choose short-term accommodation near likely work, school or healthcare, then test peak-hour journeys. Keep enough liquidity for deposits and setup costs, but avoid carrying unnecessary cash. A slower first month usually prevents an expensive lease, unsuitable shipment or rushed vehicle purchase.

Common failure points
What to watch for
Shipping before eligibility
Dispatching goods before confirming customs status and timing can create storage fees or unexpected duty.
Prescription assumptions
Availability and import controls differ; check Thai FDA rules for the exact medicine.
One payment channel
A blocked foreign card can become urgent before a Thai account is available.
