Car insurance in Thailand

Understand compulsory Por Ror Bor, voluntary insurance classes, repair networks, driver conditions and the claims process before driving a car or motorcycle in Thailand.

Thailand essentials

What the policy needs to solve

The headings used by insurers are only a starting point. Read the definition, benefit, exclusion and claim condition together.

01

Por Ror Bor is compulsory

Thailand's compulsory motor insurance supports statutory compensation for people injured or killed in road accidents and is needed for annual vehicle registration and tax. It does not replace voluntary cover for your vehicle or broader property liability.

02

Type 1

Typically the broadest voluntary class, including own accidental damage and third-party liability, with theft, fire, flood or other perils subject to the specific policy. Vehicle age, inspection, driver and repair conditions can restrict eligibility.

03

Type 2+ and Type 3+

These lower-cost products commonly cover collision with another identifiable vehicle plus third-party liability; Type 2+ commonly adds theft and fire. Single-vehicle accidents, unidentified impact and flood treatment must be checked.

04

Type 3

Primarily third-party bodily injury and property liability, without ordinary own-vehicle collision damage. Limits, bail bond, roadside assistance and passenger accident benefits vary.

05

Licence and lawful use

Confirm that every driver holds a licence valid for the vehicle and circumstances. Drink or drug driving, unauthorised commercial use, racing, an undeclared driver or an improperly licensed motorcycle can prejudice cover.

06

Dealer or network garage

Dealer repair can matter for newer or specialist vehicles; network-garage cover may be cheaper. Check parts, depreciation, betterment, choice of garage, inspection and guarantee arrangements.

07

Flood, EV and accessories

Flood and battery damage, charging equipment, modified suspension, body kits, audio equipment and other accessories need explicit treatment. Confirm insured value and whether settlement is agreed value or market-based.

08

The accident process

Keep the insurer's claim number in the vehicle. Make the scene safe, contact emergency services and the insurer, photograph positions and damage where safe, exchange details and avoid signing documents you do not understand.

Before paying

Questions to answer

Ask each shortlisted provider the same questions and require important answers in writing.

01

Who drives the vehicle?

List regular drivers, licence type, ages and use. Do not assume an open-driver policy ignores undeclared circumstances.

02

How would the car be repaired?

Compare dealer versus network garage, genuine parts, betterment, depreciation and the locations available near home.

03

What is the insured value?

Check total-loss calculation, finance interest, accessories and whether market movements can create a shortfall.

04

Does it include flood and EV risk?

Flood depth, battery, charger, towing and electrical exclusions can be decisive in Thailand.

05

Are liability limits enough?

Por Ror Bor and a basic voluntary plan can leave serious bodily injury or property exposure.

06

What happens outside your province?

Confirm nationwide surveyors, roadside assistance, towing and repair access for long trips.

Claim preparation

Know the process before the event.

  1. 01

Stop safely, check injuries and contact emergency services where needed.

  2. 02

Call the insurer's accident service before moving vehicles unless safety or police require it.

  3. 03

Photograph positions, plates, road conditions and damage without creating further danger.

  4. 04

Do not admit liability or sign an untranslated settlement you do not understand.

  5. 05

Obtain the police reference where required and keep medical, towing and repair receipts.

  6. 06

Confirm garage, repair authority, excess, parts and expected settlement in writing.

Warning signs

Pause before buying if…

A low premium is not a saving if the contract cannot respond to the loss you intended to insure.

The seller treats Por Ror Bor as comprehensive insurance.

A Type 2+ or 3+ plan is described as covering every collision without the identifiable-vehicle condition.

The quote omits the repair-garage basis.

Vehicle modifications, commercial use or regular drivers are not recorded.

The policy value is accepted without checking finance balance or replacement cost.

English sales material is available but the controlling policy and claim documents are not explained.
