The ability to live in a country does not automatically create the right to work there. Employment, freelance work, remote work and business ownership can each engage different immigration, tax and regulatory rules.
Start here
Check whether your immigration status covers employment, self-employment, remote work, directorships and unpaid or volunteer activity.
The contractual label may differ from the substance, affecting payroll, benefits, worker protections and tax withholding.
Regular contracting, deal-making, staff management or strategic decisions can create registration or company-tax exposure.
Regulated professions, advertising, data, consumer sales and financial services may require local approval even for online operations.
Practical sequence
Read the work conditions attached to your exact immigration permission.
Map each client, employer, entity, payment flow and country where work occurs.
Check payroll, social-security and employment-law obligations before the first payment.
Separate personal and business accounts and preserve clear contracts and invoices.
Review insurance, data protection and professional licensing for the activity.
Common mistakes
Marketing language does not replace the exact conditions of a visa, work permit or tax regime.
Operating a company from a new country can affect the company’s tax position and your personal obligations.
Cash payment, short duration or helping a friend may not remove work-authorisation or licensing requirements.
The country lens
Work permits, restricted occupations, company ownership, payroll, social insurance and permanent-establishment rules differ. Review both the individual and business position.
